Blog 3-EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION PILL

The emergency pill is controversial in Chile, while some agree that is delivered to everybody, others think it should be delivered only in cases of rape, and secondly we have people who disagree on any occasion, as is the Catholic Church, which still has great power in our country and noted that "Chile needs and deserves a real and specific sex education for all children in public schools, Catholic or any religion."

The government sent a bill this year to regularize the situation of the pill, as the Comptroller General's Office suspended the delivery of the drug in the public health system, but it still sold in pharmacies, which in the opinion of government and women's organizations social discrimination was evident for poor women, as if she had money to buy the medicine would be no problem, but if she was lower class and had no resources would not get the pill. The project submitted by the Government states that "State agencies with jurisdiction in the matter made available to the population both hormonal contraception and non-hormonal emergency contraception and non-hormonal contraception, natural and artificial." This issue has been a great challenge for the government right, because one of their political parties, the UDI, is strongly opposed to the delivery of this pill. This party is linked to Opus Dei, even they do not agree with any method of contraception, much less with the emergency pill, because they say it is abortion.

Whether or not abortion depends from the point of view that each looks at it, and when life begins for us, because if the pill prevents implantation of the new being and for us from there if life begins abortive but if we start to life when it is physically in training the fetus would not be abortion. This topic is very broad and complex and need to be well informed to give a valid opinion.

Dr. Valenzuela noted the importance of the''fertile window''that among later taking the pill after having sex less likely it is to take effect, but the study is based on a very few people, Dr. Croxato which disputes this not be a valid survey. Also this last doctor tells Valenzuela that his hypothesis is not valid, since it is not based on any kind of study on the mechanism of action of the pill, which is very important to understand what really makes this medicine in the body of the woman who takes it. Moreover, they argue about the true effectiveness is levonorgestrel, even between the same scientists is being studied to achieve a consensus.

For my part, I think the issue is too important for our society, but if even the scientists and people in power as the government does not cost much agree that people have an accurate idea of when it may or may not occupy this pill. I think it ought to be in cases of rape if it is an abortifacient, and if it is not the case that the person with a mature thought it deems necessary, to avoid maternal and fetal deaths from clandestine abortions.
